Mountable Access Platform

Our LNW track team based in Preston has been investigating how to minimise the risks of working at height on Salmon and Parr wagons.  The Babcock team has been working together with Network Rail and Aqua, the platform supplier, to explore a work platform that has the potential to provide a safer and more secure working position when unloading wagons. The aim of the platform is to make work activities such as unstrapping, sleeper spacing, removing dunnage and attaching sleepers to the Track Layer Lifting Beam much safer by providing a secure access platform to protect staff from a potential fall. The first trial took place in a controlled environment at Crewe Basford Hall Sidings in February this year and the result proved to be successful. The platform was fitted to a Salmon wagon and work activities were stimulated to test the feasibility of the proposal. The next stage is to carry out the process of unloading sleepers to further test the platforms feasibility.
